FAQS

Q: My Mutoh printer show in the display the message “NOT ORIGINAL INK” when I insert my cartridge, this means that the smart card is not original?
A: NO. The Mutoh printers display always the message “NOT ORIGINAL INK” when it has a problem with the smart card, but normally it is the same with an alternative card or with a Mutoh original card, and the message can be produced by a different range of problems. You can check this with an original smart card attached to an original cartridge. If you take out the chip and place in a wrong place (moving it 4/5 millimeters from the original place) and insert again the cartridge you will have the “Not original Ink” message but is original ink and card!. The problem is that the machine don’t say you which is the problem, only gives this message when it has a problem. This message can be related to some different problems but basically are 3:

  1. Bad placed smart card. The Mutoh machines are very critical to the place were the smart card is glue. A movement of 3-4 millimeters from the right place can give this problem.
  2. Wrong type of ink (you have an eco machine and insert a cartridge with a mild smart card), or wrong color model of the smartcard (you insert the yellow cartridge in the place of the magenta cartridge).
  3. Different size of the cartridge than expected. In big part of the Mutoh machines you can mix 220ml and 440ml cartridges without problems but in some ValueJet models (1204 and 1304 basically) with old versions of the firmware you can have problems if you mix the two sizes.

Refer to the Mutoh tech bulletin TIB252 for these problems and the way to correct them.

Q: I was working with 220ml cartridges in my Mutoh 1204 ValueJet and when I insert a new 440ml cartridge it don’t recognize the cartridge.
A: In the Mutoh Valuejet models 1204, 1304 and 1604 there is a problem with the old firmware that were not prepared to support the 440ml, and for this reason they refuse the 440ml cartridges, but not only alternative cartridges, also the original cartridges. Updating to the right firmware makes that the machines recognize the 440ml cartridges, but in the 1204 and 1304 still can give some problems with the volume of ink used.
Refer to the Mutoh tech bulletins TIB216 (Vj1204), TIB276 (Vj1304) and TIB253 (Vj1604) to know more about which firmware is the right one for each machine to recognize the 440ml cartridges.

Q: I was working right in my machine (ValueJet, RockHopper 2&3 and SpitFire) with alternative inks in 220ml and 440ml cartridges with alternative smart cards and after updating to a new firmware the machine refused all or big part of the cartridges.
A: Mutoh is introducing in the last times new revisions of the firmware that under the advertising of giving new production tools, or that improve some tools of the machine really what it is making is trying to kill the alternative smart cards. As customers know this is not legal because European and USA laws tell very clear that the manufacturer can’t put systems that block the option of the customer to put other supplies in their machine, but the manufacturers support these implementation in the arguments that they don’t made them to block the machines against alternative supplies, “only to prevent customers to make the mistake of putting the wrong color in the wrong place and that the machine knows better the ink remaining in the cartridge”. These arguments only are a distraction of the real target that is to prevent customers have the opportunity to put other inks in their machines and keep this ink business blocked to their product. What we recommend is not to update to the last revision of the firmware without checking if is compatible with the smart cards used.

Q: I had updated to a new version of the firmware without checking if it is compatible and now the smart cards don’t work, or I have a brand new machine with the last revision of the firmware that is not compatible with your smart cards. I have a chance to solve this?
A: Yes. In big part of the Mutoh machines there is the possibility to downgrade the machine to a previous firmware and make it work again with our alternative smart cards. We aware that if you update the machine to a new killer firmware with the alternative smart cards inserted at the same time they can be damaged, and after you downgrade the machine these damaged cards will not be recognized and you will need to ask your supplier for new branded smart cards to replace them.
There is also some firmware from Mutoh that makes that also the original Mutoh smart cards were not recognized by the machine.
Refer to the Mutoh tech bulletin TIB284 about the correct way to update or downgrade the firmware of your machine, and the tech flash 26 for the Valuejet firmware that give the problem of not recognize the smart cards also with original Mutoh cards.

Q: I want to use ink in litters in my Mutoh RH2&3 or Spitfire machine, what I need?
A: In these Mutoh machines you only need to use the ink in litters a set of refillable cartridges or a bulk system from Mutoh or another manufacturer, and a smart card reader from Mutoh. Big part of the Mutoh machines and OEMs produced in the last two years come with it incorporated. You can detect it if in the right of the network connector you have a drawing of hand with a smart card reader and a thin long hole to insert the cards. In some machines this socket is protected with a silver tape to protect it against dust. You can take out this tape and see the smart card socket. Also in some models of OEM machines like Agfa or in the original SpitFire 100 this socket is located in the top of the control panel.
Also is possible to install this reader with a Mutoh kit for the RH2&3 and Spitfire units that had been produced without it. With this smart card reader you can use smart cards of 1 litter to refill the machine with the inks.

============================================

Q: How many cards of each color I must to insert in the smart card reader to work with my machine in 6 color mode?
A: Really the machine don’t takes care of the colors when is working with 1 litter smart cards (PRINTER MODE), it only keeps track of the milliliters you insert to work. This means that if you put 8 cards of 1 litter of the colors you want in the machine it will say that has 8000 credits of ink (this means 8000ml, 1 credit = 1 milliliter), and after you can use the amount of the color you want up to this 8000ml credit. This means that you can charge only black cards and after print only yellow.
This also means that we can charge only CMYK colors in a 6 color machine (with lights) and still use the Light Cyan and Light Magenta without problems.
The machine only think about generic credits (milliliters) not specific colors.

============================================

Q: When I work with 1litter smart cards can I work with ECO ink?
A: Yes, but you must make a previous steep for this. The Mutoh machines were designed only to work with mild solvent inks in the 1 litter configuration, and in the Eco mode the machine only works with 220ml and 440ml cartridges. Is very easy to make the machine think that is working in mild solvent mode perhaps you were putting eco ink in the refill system. The machine only know what the smart cars says, and if they say that were mild solvent inks the machine will work right, not matter that you have in your cartridges eco ink.

============================================

Q: is important to put the 1 litter smart cards in the order they show in the label?
A: YES, this is very important because if you don’t take care of the order you can repeat to times the same code in one cycle and the machine will recognize the card but will not charge the credits because the code is still in his list. This is the reason that cards must be insert in the right order 01/19, 02/19, etc until you reach the last one of the set to not have problems with repeated codes.
